The recent inclement weather in Louisiana gave rise to multiple car accidents. The heavy amount of rain and water on the roadways can create flooding and hazardous driving conditions. One accident resulted in the driver facing charges for drunk driving and drug possession. The accident occurred on the northbound side of I-10 near Baton Rouge.

Police officers had been apprised of a wreck and found an SUV in a ditch when they arrived at the site of the accident. The vehicle was resting on its side. The driver, who did not appear to have suffered any serious injuries, reportedly told the officers that he had been drinking. Officers then conducted a pat-down search of the man.

In the process of searching the man, the officers reportedly found bags of white powder in the man’s pockets. According to the police report filed by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, the bags contained cocaine. As a result, the driver is facing charges of DWI and drug possession. In addition, he was charged with driving on a suspended license.

Being involved in an automobile accident and being charged with drunk driving can be a scary and unsettling experience that can leave one confused and possibly in shock. A person may not be thinking clearly and may say things without fully thinking them through. There are procedures police must follow when conducting a search and collecting evidence. When charged with drunk driving in Louisiana, an attorney can apprise a person of one’s rights and help to determine that proper procedures were followed in collecting evidence and that the accused’s rights are upheld.
